COMPLICATED GRIEVING RELATED TO SUDDEN LOSS OF PREGNANCY, FETUS OR CHILD
- Allow parents to express their feelings make sure you are listening and present when talking with them
- Express condolences and refer to the loss as whatever the parents use. If is is "baby, child, pregnancy, etc."
- Avoid judgement or cliches
- Provide education about the "normal" grief process, including physical and emotional symptoms
- Refer them to community support groups, or services
- Create memories for them of the baby (if possible)
- Grief is individual, so make sure you individualize care
- Encourage patient to discuss concerns with partner
- Assess for anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem
- After establishing a relationship of trust, give them permission to openly discuss issues with sexuality.
- Assess spiritual needs, cultural needs, and facilitate visits from spiritual leaders
- Encourage open discussion with members of family
- Offer to call anyone the patient would like present
- Refer to appropriate support
